Fairfax1As requested by Pablo Salazar (pablosalaco@gmail.com)

This is a recording from Muse’s second tour of the USA on the 9th August; the venue is The Patriot Center which is in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C.. I don’t have any other info on this show, neither a review nor even how this bootleg sounds. So I’ll just get to the point!

It was taped by Cabbage (craigkabis@gmail.com) on an iRiver.

Here are the details that were included in the readme file:

Box In Ring

boxinring1Box In Ring is an unofficial DVD which is often sold on eBay and in small DVD stores in France. It was created by a company called Boot X Press Production in 2005, and was pressed and printed like an official DVD. Personally, I don’t know how they continue to get away with selling it! The DVD was liberated for free public distribution by our very own Phil (Kynch), who began sharing it on the Muse Hub. The production company used the same source for each rip, a German TV Channel. It contains three concerts:

  • Rock AM Ring 2004 (Incomplete)
  • Christmas Special, Philipshalle 1999
  • AB Box Brussels 2003

It is pretty obvious that the creators of the DVD are not fans of Muse, what with the silly misnaming of songs on the DVD menus and on the DVD cover itself, e.g. ‘Sowbiz,’ ‘Sing of Absolution,’ ‘Neverborn’ and ‘Stockholm.’

Not that we condone purchasing bootlegs, but this DVD is absolutely great, and I think I might have bought it if I couldn’t have downloaded it. The menus all look very professional (motion video menus), and the quality of the rips are amazing. The Christmas Special and AB Box Brussels segments are both the best sources available on the bootleg scene; there are many bad versions of the Christmas Special (once I got a black and white VHS sourced copy!!), and the AB Box Brussels has a VCD version floating around on the Muse Hub and some mpeg rips on various fansites.

2006-12-17 Zénith de Nantes

zenith1As Muse’s conquest of Europe continued, they hit France in mid-December to play four shows in the major cities, with Razorlight as the support band. (This is a shame because when I saw Muse in England, I had to put up with watching The Noisettes!!) Sporting huge lighting effects in the arenas, Muse blew everyone away! On the 17th December (Show Three of the French tour), they played Le Zénith Nantes Métropole. Muse played a fifteen track setlist, which seems a little short. Apparently, the reason for this, according to Microcuts.net, was that Chris had an anxiety attack before the show. They opened the show with Map of the Problematique and closed with Knights of Cydonia.

This is quite possibly one of the best amateur video recordings I’ve ever seen – well done to “Christophe M.” for filming it! The camera is in a set position, zooming in and out on the band quite well. The sound is good, if a bit tinny. The recording was made using a “Sony DCR HC40E” in a 4:3 aspect ratio (720 x 576); the audio is dolby digital 48000 hz, 2 channel stereo. As far as we know, the original recording was transferred from the recorder through DVD authoring software to create the menus, then copied straight to DVD.

2007-07-29 Pentaport Rock Festival

pentaport 1The Pentaport Rock Festival is held annually for three days at the end of July in Incheon, South Korea. It is considered one of the biggest rock music events in South Korea. The festival takes place in the Songdo region of Incheon Metropolitan City. Often, the Pentaport Festival takes place on the same weekend as the Fuji Rock Festival in Naeba, Japan.

In addition to Muse, this year’s other Pentaport headliners included:

The Chemical Brothers
Ocean Colour Scene
OK Go

Muse headlined/closed the festival on Sunday night, playing a sixteen track setlist including Unintended, which seems to be appearing in a lot of shows lately.
This bootleg was recorded by Ceriver (if you read this please contact us, and thank you!). The show was broadcast on the TV channel SBS19 which transmitted a 1080i HD feed, which was then downscaled to DVD format. I am not sure which program that was used to downscale the HD feed, however the quality of the DVD seems rather pixelated. The past few broadcasts of Muse have included Hysteria and Time is Running Out. This one is no exception, and you will hear no complaints from me because I love both these songs!

2006-07-02 4Music Presents…Muse

2006 4Music 1Channel4 has always been one of my favorite English TV channels. It happens to broadcast some of the most interesting shows on television, be it their documentaries or sitcoms. One of Channel4′s most famous programs is 4Music Presents… which introduces well-known bands and allows them to play a small promotional set and sit for an interview. The show is hosted by the lovely Edith Bowman! Muse didn’t escape the tradition and delivered yet another storming performance. The one thing I like about this one is that the broadcast alternates between interviews with Matthew Bellamy and Dominic Howard and live versions of the four singles released by Muse from their latest album Black Holes And Revelations. To top things off, Muse are playing in an empty studio (with no crowd covering their sound) and a very nice colour-changing background that goes from green to blue to…pink.

Another quality bootleg recording by Joefish, it is as we have come to expect: excellent. It is a DVB-S rip and has undergone no re-encoding, the aspect ratio of the video is 16:9 widescreen (704 x 576), and the audio is 192k MP2. It was originally uploaded to alt.binaries.mpeg.video.music in the pure “.mpg” format and it has been uploaded to the server the same, so just so you know it is not in the DVD structure of vob files although it should play on a general DVD player as it is a DVD Compliant MPG file.

2000-08-18 Bizarre Festival

Bizarre 2000 1 Bizarre Festival is one of the most exciting Muse performances back in the early days. A lot of fans attribute to this gig a special note for being the place where most of the unrecorded songs (to be on Muse’s 2001 release Origin Of Symmetry) were played for the first time and broadcast on television such as Bliss which was very different back then.

This is a must have for any Muse fan. Thanks to Clément for supplying us with this copy that is just excellent: the image is perfect and the sound is round and will sound awesome on your Hi-Fi system. There is a a small error at the bottom of the video but this is barely noticeable, it just looks like a dirty head on the VHS it was recorded from.

The sample I made is of the Riff they played back in 2000 just before doing Sunburn. I made a mistake while converting and the video’s aspect ratio has been changed to 16:9 in the sample, even though the original one is of 4:3. Open the file with VLC and change theaspect to 4:3 to get an ideo of how it looks.

Sit back and enjoy Muse as they were and will always be remembered.
