Muse in Singapore – Interview

Source: Straits Times Newspaper/Hyper @ MuseLive.com

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy says the English rock trio is on a stopover here so he could buy rugs from Arab Street

THERE’S something about Matt Bellamy that endears him to you the moment he says ‘hello’.

Bearing no rock-star airs, the 29-year-old frontman of the English rock trio Muse immediately engages you in friendly banter, transfixing you with his piercing blue eyes.

Speaking to Life! in an exclusive interview at a business lounge in Raffles The Plaza earlier this month, he is relaxed and chirpy – a stark contrast to his intense and energetic onstage persona.

Bellamy and drummer Dominic Howard, 30, were in town on a four-day stopover enroute to Australia for gigs there as part of their current world tour.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme, 29, was in Britain and planned to meet his bandmates in Australia.

Formed in 1997 in Devon, England, the band had performed here for the first time in January to a massive crowd of more than 7,000 people at Fort Canning Park.

Their fourth and latest studio release, Black Holes And Revelations, topped the music charts in Britain, Europe and Australia when it was released last year and has sold over two million copies worldwide.

He is the son of George Bellamy, rhythm guitarist for 1960s British rock group The Tornados, and currently lives in Italy with his psychologist girlfriend Gaia Polloni, 26.

He gives Life! an update on himself and the band.

1. What brings you guys here again?

I wanted to buy some Kashmiri rugs for my house. In England, it costs thousands of pounds to buy one, so after this interview, I’m going to Arab Street to buy five rugs. Also, we just wanted to recuperate because I don’t like doing two plane rides on the same day.

2. What was your impression of Singapore from your debut performance?

That show was crazy. It was a very nice compliment and surprise to see so many people at the concert. We went to a few bars last night and we met some people who recognised us. We feel very welcome here.

3. What is it about your live shows that dazzle audiences?

When we go on stage, we try to do the things that we want to see if we are in the crowd. For that reason, we give our all and we’ve learnt not to be shy and not be afraid to do extreme things musically.

4. Keyboardist-bassist Morgan Nicholls is accompanying the band on the current world tour. Has he become a permanent member of the band?

We don’t know actually. He’s a really cool guy to hang out with and I think he’ll be touring with us in the future. He is a very good studio engineer. I don’t think we need any new musical assistance in the studio but maybe we could use him as an engineer.

5. In June, crew and members of both Muse and My Chemical Romance (who will perform here on Dec 11) were stricken with food poisoning while on tour together in the United States. What happened?

That was a disaster. I think we (Muse) were the only people who didn’t have food poisoning. We felt like we were in the film 28 Days Later… because we went to the venue and everyone was sick and we were the only people who were healthy. The concert was not even being set up because all the crew members were on the floor.

6. Your music has a lot of references to Mars and Cydonia. Where does your obsession stem from?

I read this book about archaeological scientists who had viewed the Giza pyramids. On Mars, in an area called Cydonia, there appears to be small pyramid remains, which have a similar pattern to the Giza pyramids.

The remains also suggest the pyramids here might have a link to those on Mars. I like the idea that we have come from somewhere else.

7. You have a new album in the works. What will it sound like?

To be honest, we’ve not recorded anything yet. There are a few ideas which we’ve explored but we’ve not really had a chance to record yet because we’re touring so much. Musically, it’s difficult to say. I’d like to keep it unpredictable at the moment.

8. Complete this sentence. If I could live my life all over again…

I would like to be fluent in many languages. I’m embarrassed that I can speak only English.

Muse in New Zealand – Interview

Source: 2007 Fairfax New Zealand Limited/Hyper @ MuseLive.com

Muse’s Matt Bellamy offers VICKI ANDERSON a few revelations about conspiracy facts and life on Mars.

Get set for the best live gig of your life at the Westpac Arena on Sunday when UK new-prog rock supergroup Muse will surely send the stage into lift-off mode.

Muse — Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard — formed in Teignmouth, Devon, when they got together as 16-year-olds after their former bands combusted. All those years ago they left their plastering jobs and took a gamble on music. Fast forward to 2007 and, deservedly, they’ve just been voted the Best Live Act in 2007 by Q Magazine.

I’m expecting to talk to Wolstenholme so it’s a real surprise when the big cheese of Muse, Bellamy, rocks onto the line.

If music is the voice of each generation then Bellamy should be considered the mouthpiece of the conspiracy theorists, or factualists as he’d have them known.

Luckily, my mate Raoul has often bent my ears with his theories on global domination and what really happened at 9/11 so I’m well prepared for a 45-minute conversation about hidden world news.

“A lot of people get labelled as conspiracy theorists,” says Bellamy. “It’s a clever way of making someone devalued; lessening what they’re talking about before they’ve even talked about it.

“It’s close to propaganda calling people conspiracy theorists. In lots of cases, they are actually conspiracy factualists.”

Who engineered 9/11? Was there really a plane? Is global warming a swindle to keep the developing world in poverty? Is oil running out or is it a hoax to drive prices up? Is there a clandestine organisation of conglomerates looking for New World Order?

“There’s loads of ideas out there. The ones I like the most are the ones where people tend to stick to the facts.”

Muse aim to encourage “sheeple” to open their eyes and minds with their various lyrics on these topical subjects.

“There are a few risks out there in life but you’re far more likely to get knocked down by a car than bombed by a terrorist. It’s just non- stop stuff to make people scared and make them buy more things off the internet and hide in the house. It’s a horrible way of making the sheep afraid to leave the herd.”

Bellamy is suspicious of surveillance technology and the apparent ease with which people can tap into your private life. He believes identity cards are not far away.

He believes that people need to wake up and march in protest more often.

“The only way to get change is for the masses to team together and start marching in the streets.

“Democracy has had a go, but now we need a, hopefully gentle, revolution.

“It’s unusual I talk this much about it in an interview, really. There’s definitely a fair few songs on the album that really go for this kind of stuff, but there are other elements, too. I try to sing from various perspectives.”

Muse’s latest album, Black Holes and Revelations, is simply a stunner; orbiting whirls of soundscapes and distortion distorted within an inch of its life.

Interview - New Zealand

I have a theory of my own. I ask Bellamy if the sexy track Supermassive Black Hole is an ode to supermodels. Part of the lyrics are, as far as I can make out: “Grey shoes burning in the dead of night and the super star’s sucked into the super masses.” Bellamy, however, laughs loudly.

“There are no burning shoes, woman; the word is glaciers,” he laughs. “It is sort of more like a shallower approach and I don’t mean that in a negative sense, some of our music tends to be deep and complex. It’s nice to take a breather now and then do something a bit more light-hearted. Starlight was a bit like that. It was a big change for us, exploring the more optimistic side.

“Some people in bands tend to get all caught up in boxing themselves into one particular thing in the hope that will make themselves stand out a bit more. I used to think a bit like that, I suppose, but now I just want to be, I sound really ’70s man, but I just want to be myself, man.

“With this album we wanted to show that we’re not just a bunch of miserabilists.”

The Knights of Cydonia — as pictured on the album cover of Black Holes and Revelations — relates to another of Bellamy’s theories. He believes that we all began life on Mars.

“Cydonia is the area of Mars where people think there are some structures. I like the idea that some kind of battle took place and a few good people decided to bail out and come to Earth and have a go here. They are the Knights of Cydonia. I like the idea of that.

Black Holes and Revelations was initially born in a bat-infested cave in the south of France where the group sequestered themselves. They found a studio that had been closed down for about 50 years. Appropriately, it was originally a knight’s templar.

“We were there for six weeks and we were going a bit beserk and mental with cabin fever and then we decided to go completely the other way and went to New York to record. But by that time we were so sure of what we were doing that it all happened very quickly so we recorded most of the songs in a couple of weeks. We actually mixed it in London, but we came to Italy to do the strings.”

Bellamy says it’s too early to speculate on how their next album will sound. He’s thinking of combining electronica with classical elements, but it’s not until they start arranging the songs that they take shape and, often, take on a completely different direction.

Muse added Christchurch to their New Zealand playlist as they’re keen to check out the scenery and as a response to the loads of requests on their internet message board over the years from Cantabrians.

There’s only one person Bellamy hopes doesn’t show up at the gig.

“There’s this one guy, I’m not sure where he’s from — he has an East European accent but I think he’s from Ireland. He’s a bit of a stalker type. He has endless handwriting in books with words circled and pages ripped out and then he puts in weird cryptic messages with my name. He puts car registration plates with the End Is Nigh written on it.

“The scary thing with dealing with the conspiracy world is that every now and then you get one of those who’ve gone fully over the edge. Whenever I get a package from him, that’s always the weirdest day of the tour.”

Muse have come a long way since their teen days of hiring out a boxing ring and stashing cider behind the ropes, “getting drunk and trashing the gear”.

“Our dreams came true — we just wanted to tour England when we started and now that has evolved into a whole different thing. Now it’s more that we’ve become more conscious of the impact we might be having on people. You can’t get too caught up in it, but I’m aware of wanting to have some positive impact with what I’m doing. I don’t want everyone to get depressed listening to our music. I’d rather help them feel inspired and able to change things; that’s what I’m aiming for.”

Or as the Knights of Cydonia would say — Don’t waste your time or time will waste you.

According to ChartAttack.com Haarp Tour CD/DVD release will be on the 19th of February in Canada, how true this is I don’t know as they say “The collection, which is already available in the U.K”

Again we are still waiting for the official announcement from Warner.

Muse To Release Live Collection In Canada On Feb. 19
Tuesday November 13, 2007 @ 03:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Fresh off being named best live act of 2007 by Q Magazine, British progressive rock trio Muse are set to release a collection of live recordings. The Haarp Tour: Live From Wembley will be available February 19 from Warner Canada.

The release is a two-part CD/DVD collection with recordings from the band’s two-night headlining stand at London’s famed Wembley Stadium on June 16 and 17 as part of their Haarp Tour. Both shows, which were the first to be held at the newly rebuilt facility, sold out the 90,000 capacity venue.

The collection, which is already available in the U.K., is being released in three formats — a CD/DVD special edition release, a CD/DVD release or the as the DVD alone. The DVD features individual tracks from their live performances along with an uncut recording of the entire June 17 concert, backstage videos and a documentary on the two-night gig.

The band’s last release was 2006s Black Holes And Revelations. The band told Q magazine this month that they’ve already begun work on their fourth studio album and that fans can expect it to be even more electronic than their past efforts.

In addition to winning best live act, the boys also took home best headliners and best U.K. & Ireland act at the recent MTV Europe awards in Germany.

Auckland 2007-11-21 – Review – Stuff.co.nz

Review from Stuff.co.nz:

Muse’s reputation as one of the best live acts in the world was left firmly intact after a blistering show to a sellout crowd at Waitakare Trusts Stadium. Reviewer Jeremy Redmore took it all in.

Having won countless awards all over the world for their live performances and having seen them in 2004 when they last played their own show in Auckland, I was expecting a lot. And I got it all.

Lead singer/guitarist/pianist Matt Bellamy opened the set with the opening song off their latest album, Black Holes and Revelations, and the crowd knew immediately they were in for a special night.

The stage slowly revealed itself to be visually one of the best around and the band hit the crowd with perfect renditions of some of their most well-known songs.

Most of the set was comprised of tracks from their latest album which seemed to please the crowd. Recent hits Starlight and Invincible hit a major chord with the fans.

They also kept diehard fans happy by playing perfect moshpit numbers Newborn, Citizen Erased, Time is Running Out and Stockholm Syndrome.

Highlights of the night included epic prog-rock song Butterflies and Hurricanes, from their Absolution album, in which simulated butterflies and hurricanes actually appeared on the stage in the form of confetti and compressed air.

They also played their classic cover of Feeling Good, made famous by Nina Simone – complete with megaphone.

The band made us wait for their encore but Plug in Baby and Knights of Cydonia were worth it – along with their famous giant balloons filled with confetti.

Bellamy is an absolute virtuoso and the three-piece – plus a fourth member on keyboards/percussion/atmosphere – ticked all the boxes you could dream of filling for a concert.

The Trusts Stadium was a great venue as well – the only let down being the traffic after the show.

Muse have been touring non-stop for more than a year, with their Christchurch show on Sunday night being the final stop on their world tour. Get along if you can – you won’t be disappointed.

According to MuseWiki Muse played this venue in 2004. Its a permanent stage at the bottom of a hill, situated next to the picturesque Brisbane River.

Bullet in the Head by Rage Against the Machine was played during sound check, followed by Map of the Problematique. Dom appeared to be having trouble with the kit throughout the night.

The balloons were released during Plug In Baby

The setlist was:
01 – Take a Bow
02 – Map of the Problematique + Maggie’s Farm riff
03 – New Born + Microphone Fiend riff + Ashamed outro
04 – Butterflies & Hurricanes
05 – Micro Cuts + Riff
06 – Supermassive Black Hole
07 – Feeling Good
08 – Ruled by Secrecy
09 – Soldier’s Poem
10 – Invincible
11 – Hysteria
12 – Fury
13 – Starlight
14 – Whole Lotta Love riff + Time Is Running Out
15 – Stockholm Syndrome + Dead Star riff + Hyper Music riff
Encore
16 – Plug In Baby
17 – Knights of Cydonia

Musing With Muse – TV3.co.nz

Another interview with a New Zealand newspaper/website!

TV3.co.nz:

Musing With Muse

Right now, British prog-rock outfit muse are playing a gig in Auckland, before heading south tomorrow for their Sunday concert in Christchurch.

According to their fans and the multitude of awards they have won, Muse are a pretty big deal.

Nightline’s David Farrier sat down with their front-man Matt Bellamy and after some small talk, they got stuck into their shared love of conspiracy theories.

According to various music magazines, Muse have been the best live band in the world for the last five years.

Matt Bellamy is the pianist, guitarist and frontman of muse, who’ve been touring for 18 months, and for the last few weeks they have been playing in all the same countries as our friend Justin Timberlake.

“Yeah he seems like a nice guy. Seems to be down to earth for someone of that position,” Bellamy says.

Matt Bellamy is pretty down to earth himself.

Unless he’s tearing it up on stage, or engaged in his other love – conspiracy theories.

And that’s what Nightline really wanted to talk about: the biggest conspiracy theory of all, formulated by a man called David Ike that many in the ruling class are actually giant reptilian lizard shapeshifters disguised in human bodies.

At the less extreme end it’s the theory that important public figures are part of an elite, hidden bloodline.

“And if you look at the royal family they are still standing by that. They only mate with each other. They don’t really go with the peasants like us. But why? Is it because they like their big chins? But it’s definitely something they want to keep in the family,” muses Bellamy.

This mysterious bloodline supposedly extends across the continents.

So Farrier was keen to get Matt’s thoughts on whether some of his favourite people could be reptilians.

It turns out none were.

Just remember, Matt Bellamy is one talented individual and Petra Bagust is not a reptilian shape shifter.

You can download the interview from here.
